Signs of Modernity Anxiety and Social Criticism in Nasida Ria’s “Tahun 2000”: A Peircean Semiotic Analysis
Abstract
The song “Tahun 2000,” popularized by the modern qasidah group Nasida Ria in the late twentieth century, is not merely a form of entertainment but also a visionary manifesto of social criticism. This study aims to reveal the denotative and connotative meanings embedded in the song lyrics by employing Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotic analysis. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study examines the lyrics as units of signs, namely representamen, which refer to literal objects and are interpreted as forms of social criticism through the interpretant. The findings show that the lyrics accurately project anxieties concerning technological dehumanization, land conversion, climate crisis, and structural unemployment. In 2026, the interpretation of these signs proves highly relevant, as past warnings have transformed into the objective realities of the present.
