Development of A1-Level Reading Learning Media with the Theme ‘‘Enjoy Your Meal’’
Abstract
Along with the development of globalization, foreign language proficiency has become an important necessity in education, employment, and social life, including German language learning at Universitas Negeri Medan. However, students still experience difficulties in understanding A1-level reading texts due to limited vocabulary mastery, lack of understanding of sentence structures, and the use of less interactive learning media. Therefore, this study aims to develop an interactive learning medium based on the Socrative application with the theme “Guten Appetit” to improve A1-level German reading skills. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method based on the Richey and Klein model, which consists of planning, development, and evaluation stages. The data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 29 students of the German Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan. The results showed that 82.8% of the students experienced difficulties in understanding texts related to the theme “Guten Appetit,” especially in vocabulary mastery and understanding simple sentence structures. The developed learning media took the form of interactive quizzes using the Socrative application, consisting of multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer questions. The material expert validation obtained a percentage of 95.8%, while the media expert validation reached 86.11%, with an overall average of 90.95%, which falls into the “highly feasible” category. The use of Socrative-based learning media also showed positive impacts on students’ participation, learning motivation, and reading comprehension. Thus, the Socrative application can be used as an interactive, contextual, and effective learning medium to support A1-level German reading instruction.
